Scott Barlow

CEO, Central Utah Clinic

Scott Barlow is a self-proclaimed numbers guy. He studied accounting in college and later received an MBA from Westminster College. After working as an accountant for a Fortune 100 company, he was recruited to the healthcare industry where he discovered he had a unique opportunity to put his accounting skills to work while helping others. He joined Central Utah Clinic as CEO in 1991 and has never looked back.

“Healthcare is a very unique industry where you get a chance to really help the lives of people. I was always drawn to the opportunity to serve in that kind of capacity,” he says. “The accounting degree was a method of which I could provide some support and become capable of using that data to help manage the business.”

Central Utah Clinic is Utah’s largest multi-specialty medical clinic system. It employs nearly 1,400 individuals practicing at 73 urban and rural locations and provides services to more than 400,000 Utahns throughout the year.

One of Barlow’s greatest achievements has been keeping Central Utah Clinic’s several locations on the cutting-edge of healthcare innovation. Under Barlow’s leadership, the organization was one of the nation’s first clinics to successfully deploy an electronic health records system, which it launched in 2002. The clinic was paperless by 2003. “It’s enabled us to grow dramatically of almost 20 percent a year for 10 straight years now. But more importantly, we can provide a better service to our patients at a lower price,” he says.

Barlow’s more recent focus has been to decrease the organization’s healthcare costs for its patients. “Healthcare is no longer affordable to many Americans, and it’s important that we find new ways to provide services to help people and keep people healthy,” he says, adding that the organization will be implementing new technologies to continue its cost-lowering mission. “This year is going to be a neat year for us in terms of the real innovative techniques of healthcare that haven’t been done before and a lot of work that’s really going to result in a dramatic healthcare system that will benefit our organization and will help the people that we have a privilege to serve.”

Barlow’s dedication to improving patients’ lives extends to his large staff. He is highly respected by colleagues, who say that he genuinely cares about everyone. “I don’t think anyone else could have taken us on this journey that we’ve been on over the last several years and the growth that we’ve experienced without his direction and his ability to lead and encourage people to do their best,” says Becky Johnson, director of human resources. “Because he’s so open and treats people with kindness, everyone wants to do their best for him. His capabilities are tremendous.”

  • Central Utah Clinic has sustained a growth rate of 25 percent for eight years.

  • It is comprised of 178 independent physicians and 92 nurse practitioners or physician assistants who offer more than 25 specialties.

  • The clinic provides outreach services to 17 rural communities.

  • The clinic is Utah’s only Accountable Care Organization.
